The Bahrain Football Association (BFA), founded in 1957, is the governing body for football in Bahrain. However, in recent years, Al-Riffa Club has emerged as the dominant force in Bahraini football, winning the league title seven times in the past ten seasons.

The Bahrain national football team played its first international match in 1966 against Saudi Arabia. Bahrain has since played over 200 international matches, and its highest FIFA ranking was 44th in 2009.

Al-Riffa Club is the most successful club in Bahraini football history, having won the Bahrain Premier League 13 times, the Bahrain FA Cup 10 times, and the Bahrain Super Cup 4 times. Al-Muharraq Club is the second most successful club, having won the Bahrain Premier League 32 times, the Bahrain FA Cup 24 times, and the Bahrain Super Cup 5 times.

The Bahrain national football team has qualified for the AFC Asian Cup four times, in 2004, 2007, 2011, and 2015. Bahrain's best result at the AFC Asian Cup was in 2004, when the team reached the semi-finals.
